How much time should you spend on marketing?
According to the statistics, a new life coach (in the first 3-5 years) spends an avg. of 40% of their time on marketing and only 20% on client sessions. If you work 40 hours a week (let’s be traditional), that means 8 hours of client work and 16 hours of marketing.
I was quite upset each week when I was looking at what I’ve done and how much time it takes. My expectations were different and I wanted to meet those ideas in my head about limiting marketing to almost zero and just coaching most of the time. I’m not abandoning this idea, and this is what is in my head as a goal. I’m seeing several ways to minimize marketing and maximize my time on value creation by working with people and on projects. Some of them are opportunities in the long run, and some of them are getting available sooner. For example:
Outsourcing some part of the marketing by joining a coaching platform and getting clients through them or hiring a marketing advisor.
Selling group programs
Selling productized services
Increasing the % of reselling and upselling to earlier clients
Building resources that don’t require my active hours and I can re-use them: freebies, videos, white papers
Developing themes that I can give a speech about to multiple audiences and at multiple places
When I look at the numbers here and adjust my expectations to the statistics, I feel lighter and more accomplished. I’m at the right place, I’m where I need to be now, it’s realistic.
Looking at the numbers can bring new perspectives and help us to see ourselves from a wider angle.
Affirm: Everything is soooo well.
